We’ve all had that moment when we wanted something really badly and couldn’t afford it. Maybe it was a new house or apartment. Maybe it was a new car. Maybe it was a Bape shark hoodie. Maybe it was a huge cut of filet mignon at your favorite steakhouse. Maybe, if you’re a sneakerhead like me, it was a new pair of kicks.
Not being able to afford something is a struggle we’ve all had to deal with. No matter how much money you make, there’s always something out there that’s out of your price range. Sneakers are no exception to this. Several kicks go for five figures, and most people can’t spend that kind of money on shoes.
But what if you can “afford” a dope pair by stretching your budget to the very limit, essentially going broke for kicks? Is it worth it?
I’m none too proud to admit I’ve done it before. When the Supreme Foamposites dropped, I had just enough available money for them, and I HAD to have them, being the Supreme fanboy that I am. I somehow got lucky on release day (thank you, Based God), and was able to grab a pair in my size. Sure, I ate Ramen and peanut butter sandwiches with two end pieces of bread (which I toasted to feel better about myself) for the better part of a week, but in my mind it evened out.
However, I can tell you that I wouldn’t do it again. It’s great to have a pair of rare kicks on deck, but let’s be honest with ourselves here. Rare sneakers are a want, not a need. It’s not worth sacrificing your general quality of living for a limited release. Either another release will come along that will make you forget about the last one, or you’ll be able to turn a pair sometime down the road.
So my plea to you is this: don’t affect your standard of living too much for a rare pair of kicks. There’s no shame whatsoever in admitting you just don’t have the spending cash on hand for a release, especially with how expensive sneakers are getting these days, and how frequently they drop. Sit it out, and try to remind yourself that it’s more important to have decent food in your stomach and a tank full of gas in your car than that new pair on your feet. You’ll be glad that you did.
