There’s really nothing quite like copping a new pair of kicks. The rush you get when you see something that you like and you cop it is a unique and extremely enjoyable feeling, and when you’re borderline obsessed with buying shoes, you tend to want that new-cop feel over and over again. However, in this case, you can have too much of a good thing.
In the pursuit of that rush, you may find yourself doing a lot of mindless copping. See shoe, like, shoe, buy shoe. See how thinking wasn’t involved in that process? That’s how you wind up with a closet full of kicks you won’t wear and didn’t really want in the first place. We’ve been there before, and we know how it gets. Thankfully, we’ve learned from our experiences, and we also know the best ways to ensure that you don’t wind up doing way too much mindless copping. Sit back and relax. You’re about to get educated.
Take Stock Of What You Have
Everyone who’s ever worked in a shoe store (shouts to all our sneaker retail warriors out there) will tell you that taking inventory sucks. However, it’s crucial that you take inventory of what you have to prevent mindless copping. Check out your stacks before you head to the mall or outlet and make a mental note of the kicks you’ve already got to be sure you don’t cop something that won’t get a lot of play with your current rotation.
Make Sure A Shoe Works With Multiple Fits
So you’re at the mall, and you’ve picked out a pair of kicks that you like. You’ve already got an outfit in mind, and you know that shoe’s going to be fire with the fit. But ask yourself this: will the shoe work with multiple fits? If not, it’s probably not worth the buy. The days of matching from your cap to your kicks are over. Be sure you grab something versatile that you can get good wear out of.
Don’t Go Overboard With A Color Scheme
Everyone has a color scheme that they love. For some it’s white/gum. For some, it’s all black. For many a Jordan head, it’s black and red (for me it’s black and white if you’re wondering). There’s a good chance that you’ve got at least a few pairs with your favorite color scheme in your collection, but don’t go overboard. You won’t be able to wear 10 shoes with almost-identical colorways.
Only Cop Grails
This is a bit more of a challenge than our other tips, but we’re throwing it your way anyway. Try only copping your grails. Don’t buy a shoe unless it’s something that you really, truly want. This is way easier said than done, but view it as a challenge. If you can manage to do it, you’ll have a collection full of heaters that you’ll be really happy with.
Ask Yourself “Do I Really Need This?”
If you’re deep in the sneaker game and have dozens of pairs in your closet, do you really need another pair or two? The answer is of course yes (because we’re sneakerheads, this is what we do), but ask yourself anyway. If you take an extra second or two to think about your purchase, you may realize that you don’t actually want the shoe that badly, and you can save your money to cop something that you really do want.
