My favorite basketball player of all time was elected to the Hall Of Fame last week.
Allen Ezail Iverson, legendary for his heart, scoring ability, and deadly crossover has taken his rightful place in a shrine reserved for the greatest to ever play the game.
Anyone who’s seen him play knows: there was nothing like him before, and there will be nothing like him again. He was always on the attack, moving 100 miles an hour even when he was clearly exhausted. He had the heart of a lion, going right at men who were bigger and stronger than he was. If he couldn’t go through them, he’d go around them. He had an uncanny ability to create space and get to the hoop.
In 2001, he single-handidly ran the Sixers all the way to the NBA Finals, and was named league MVP. He’s crossed up everyone from Antonio Daniels to Michael Jordan. He’s done just about everything you can do on a basketball court, and he played with such clear passion and heart it was impossible to not love him.
Allen Iverson and the way he played the game is what got me into basketball. When you were a young kid dreaming of playing hoops, he was relatable, because of his small statue. He truly showed that it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog, and for that I thank him. He’ll forever be my favorite player, and I’ll always have a fresh Sixers #3 jersey ready to go for any occasion.
Much respect to you, AI. Your legacy will live on forever, and I’m proud to say I watched you play.
Watch these highlights. You’ll be glad you did.
