Everyone loves a good game of chance. Something that’s low-risk and high reward. Something that involves some skill … but mostly just a lot of luck. That something in the sneaker game is the Keymaster arcade machine.
First popularized by Las Vegas’s Urban Necessities, the Keymaster is a game in which you attempt to fit a key through a slot to drop a prize down. It was usually stocked with things like iPads and expensive headphones, but rare sneakers make great prizes too, so the Keymaster has popped up in forwards-thinking sneaker boutiques across the country.
It’s a real winner. It’s fun. It’s inexpensive to play. You stand a chance of winning something very valuable, but you won’t be disappointed if you don’t, as you don’t have to come too far out of pocket to try your hand.
There’s many a YouTube and Instagram video where you’ll see a surprised sneakerhead winning a valuable shoe like a Yeezy 750 for one $5 play, and absolutely losing their shit. That’s the beauty of the Keymaster: it brings foot traffic into shops, and gives Joe Sneakerhead a real chance at winning a shoe he probably wouldn’t be able to get his hands on otherwise.
Want to take a crack at playing a Keymaster? There’s a few locally … but if we had to pick, we’d say our favorite one is at Piff. From Yeezys to Fragments to Flu Game XII’s there’s something for everyone, so if you’re feeling lucky, head on over to 1506 Como Ave SE, and give it a spin!
