The world lost a legend yesterday. Prince, of Purple Rain fame passed away at 57. His impact was felt all over the world, and especially here in Minneapolis, as his fans turned out in droves to honor him and his memory.
As Minnesotans, we felt a need to pay homage to Prince in our own way. We could write about his music..but that’s been done, and we’re not a music-centric website (even though we do hope you enjoy Music Mondays!). Besides his music, Prince was known for his love of purple, so we thought we’d bring together 5 of our favorite purple kicks, in no particular order. We can only hope that Prince himself would approve of these purple beauties….so we’ll get right to it.
Raekwon x Packer Shoes x Diadora N.9000 “Purple Tape”
Starting the list off is the “Purple Tape” Diadora N.9000, a purple shoe by another legendary musician. Raekwon came together with Packer Shoes and Diadora to pay homage to his classic album “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx”, which originally was released as a purple cassette tape.
Jordan V “Grape”
A classic. Ever since they were seen on Will Smith’s feet in the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the Grapes have held a special place in the heart of many a sneakerhead. The purple tongue and midsole work perfectly with the white leather upper, and the aqua accents add to the 90’s vibe even further.
Kobe 9 Elite “Hyper Grape”
There’s been many a dope purple Kobe over the years, but the “Hyper Grape” 9’s are our favorite. The low-profile, all purple Flyknit upper looks as good in the streets as it does on the court. Versatility is a beautiful thing.
Cam’ron x Reebok Ventilator Supreme “Purple Haze”
These just released on Wednesday, but they’ve already earned a spot on our list. Inspired by Cam’ron’s 2004 album “Purple Haze”, the purple upper and holographic heel tab make for a loud shoe that represents Cam’s outlandish personality perfectly.
Adidas JS Wings “Rainbow Hologram”
And last but certainly not least, the “Rainbow Hologram” JS Wings from Adidas. With a shiny pearlescent upper, these shoes are loud, brash, and colorful, and the purple accents hit them off just right. We could definitely see Prince rocking something like this.
